Birds in Flight

A sketch worked out quickly in the middle of a Thursday afternoon. The goal is to use only blues and greens and to use my new Tri-Art Arylide Yellow Light from Opus. So many new possibilities with just one more color!!!
Painting started at night while listening to Canada Live followed by The Signal on CBC Radio 2. Let's see the progress...
I wasn't too pleased with this dotty stage, I wanted the birds to stand out from the background. Today, with bravery at hand I mixed some orange and purple, added some solid lines and shadows. Voila! The birds are now flying over fields of greens like the one in this post. 24" x 12"

Bike Trip Part 3

We were looking for Beaver Lake and ended up back where we started so we kept going...
Stopping many times to look at the map and then down at the end of a trail... the peaceful lake we had visited once before in the winter.

Bike Trip Part 2

We kept going by the sea wall, it was a bit windy but all I needed was a t-shirt. :)
Rode by a big lake surrounded by sprouting willows and flowering trees.

Bike Trip

After a Hearty Breakfast (see recipe on this blog), my husband and I decided to play hooky today to go bike riding at Stanley Park. Spring is a perfect time, weather is just right! We rented our bikes (and helmets!!!) at Bayshore Bicycle, the staff there are super nice.
We stopped by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, gorgeous sky, calm water.
Flower studded grass by the water park...
And saw these narcissus amongst some strange looking brown tips, not sure what they are.

Cushion Project

I'm taking a break from painting and working on some new stuff in my sketchbook, I'll show you later... For now I'd like to share with you the couch cushions I completed a few months ago. I came up with a simple design: one that's extremely forgiving on crooked lines and different on each side so I have 2 cushions in 1! They are meant to be close-ups of leaf designs.

Here's the one side that uses my green fabric collection.
The other side is blue but still has the same fiery leaf veins.
The green colors worked out rather quickly. The blues I found more challenging but pleasing when paired with the purples. The piping edge proved difficult, had to resew 3 times!
Incidentally I was happy to find today similar colors and impact on this blog (via a link on this post from this blog). Here's the green with the blue!

A New Trail

At first it was a walk near our place but we ventured on to find a new trail.
We saw a row of blooming yellow flowers...
And some purple lovelies nestled amongst warm rocks.

Our Walk Today

Hello Happy Spring Day! I'm not sneezing as much today, keeping my fingers crossed. We decided to walk about the street near our place, took a few snapshots and here are our finds.

Some blooming branches...
A pretty flower, not sure about it's name...
I think this is a magnolia variety...
Thank goodness for sunshine and blue sky!

My Inuit Angel

This image came to me one night in my dreams. At first I had numerous 'bird people' all over one painting but I redrew and reworked the concept and came up with one single bird. Inspired by Inuit Art, particularly of internationally renowned Canadian Kenojuak Ashevak, this final image has an overall strong shape filled with smaller lines for feather detail. The result is peaceful. I feel safe as she overlooks my studio area from the hallway. 18" x 14"

Let's look closer at the details...
